Starting a 200 Club: Softball

Jackson Jones is a member of this club as he's appeared 204 times for the baseball team. In this blog post, though, I'm looking to add names to the list and I'm starting with the softball alumni.  Grace Botti appeared 222 times between 2016 and 2019  Murphy Davis appeared 214 times between 2015 and 2018 Sarah Magill appeared 205 times between 2013 and 2016  Chandler Stooksbury appeared 208 times between 2014 and 2017  Jill Torres appeared 244 times between 2017 and 2021 Haylie Shope , if pitcher and first base appearances are separate, had 183 appearances at first base and 34 in the circle for 217 total. We then add 47 appearances in basketball and she appeared 264 times overall between 2018 and 2021 (she's in the 200 club with the 47 basketball games played as she's at 230 without the pitching appearances).  So thus far, this is the 200 Club: Grace Botti Murphy Davis Jackson Jones Sarah Magill  Haylie Shope  Chandler Stooksbury Jill Torres

Baseball at the D2 Tournament- Final Update

*Note: stats shown are just since 2011  The baseball team wrapped up competition at their second D2 tournament appearance in four seasons with a second loss against Wingate in as many games.  There are six seniors on the roster who've made a lot of contributions to the program during their time in the Enchanted Valley. I don't know which of them won't return next year due to the extra year of eligibility given to all student-athletes but let's  Outfielder Logan Worley has appeared 182 times for the Mountain Lions. His fielding percentage of .984 is tied for third-best with Cole Jackson and the only two with better percentages are current assistants Dahlton Cash and Cory Ewald. He's in the top five in hits (216) and runs scored in addition to being second on the HBP list with 28 and on the stolen bases list with 35.  Left-Hander Ryan Inches has struck out 30 across 34 innings as he's appeared 23 times, with 11 appearances coming in 2022.   Infielder Noah Fit...

Baseball at the D2 Tournament- May 20th Update

The Mountain Lions remain alive! They defeated Belmont Abbey 6-5 in an elimination game and will once again face Wingate in another elimination contest   2 Hits: Ethan Underwood, Noah Fitzgerald and Jackson Jones (these three equaled Young Harris' hits total from game one)  *Jones extends his third-place mark with 224 hits while Fitzerald now has 132 and Underwood has 107  1 Hit: Logan Worley, Mark Castle, Aaron Copeland and Kyle Ayers  *Worley, with 216, is two shy of tying Trey Rogers for fourth; Castle is now two shy of seventy  Underwood, Jones and Copeland added one double apiece (the forty-fifth of Jones' career, extending his hold on fourth) Jackson Jones clubbed his thirty-fourth career homer, extending his third-best mark  Ethan Underwood added the nineteenth stolen base of his career, tying Trey Rogers for tenth. He's only been caught stealing three times    In his 103rd career appearance for the Mountain Lions and single-season hig...

Women's Lacrosse All-Time Team Cont'd

We already have the goalie position locked down with Julia Darroch. Now, let's look at some of the field positions.  One of the three attacker spots belongs to Nicole Kernohan . This is an easy choice, as her 205 career goals means she's the only 200-goal scorer across both teams. For midfielder , one of the five spots is going to defensive and offensive standout Erika Cross . Her 129 assists is the program record mark across both teams and her 103 goals means she can both create scoring chances and score herself. She also has the second-most ground balls and second-most caused turnovers.

Lacrosse Program Records (men's and women's teams combined)

Goals   Nicole Kernohan holds this mark with 205, making her the only Mountain Lion lacrosse player with 200 career goals. Bruce Silk's men's record is 104 back. Assists   Erika Cross holds this mark with 129 helpers, 55 more than men's record holder Bevan Pate. Points Kendra Parenteau holds this mark with 257, one of three Mountain Lion lacrosse players with 200 career points. To put the 90-point gap in perspective, she has seventeen more goals than Pate has goals and assists combined. Ground Balls Zach Stephenson is the runaway program record holder in this category with 327, making him the only Mountain Lion lacrosse player with 200 ground balls. Rachel Lepine's women's record is 159 further back. Caused Turnovers Rachel Lepine is not only the women's record holder with 168 ground balls, but she's also the program record holder with 78 caused turnovers, ten more than the men's record.

All-Time Teams Cont'd: Let's start the baseball roster

A quick recap: We started the men's soccer team with goalie Alex Iglesias. We started the women's soccer team with goalie Pien Van Kampen. We started the men's lacrosse team with goalie Sean Dever and faceoff specialist Zach Stephenson. We started the women's lacrosse team with goalie Julia Darroch. And we started the men's basketball team with point guard Brian Harper and shooting guard CJ Wilson. So why don't we start the baseball roster with a look at the pitcher position. For starting pitcher I'll go with Michael Livingston. His 15-16 win-loss record might not jump off the page but his spot on the all-time team goes beyond that singular stat. His 41 starts on the mound are the most in baseball's NCAA era. Since 2011, he has the most strikeouts with 280 and the second-most innings pitched with 282 and 2/3.  And then there's this stat: out of four complete games in his career, he's held his opponent scoreless in three of them . He's who I ...

Baseball NCAA-era Top Fifteen: Where do people stand entering regional action?

Innings Pitched McLain Harris is the NCAA-era record holder with 284 and 2/3, surpassing Michael Livingston's total. Chad Brown, with 103 and 2/3 innings, is currently fifteenth.   Strikeouts McLain Harris needs ten to take home the NCAA-era record, currently held by Michael Livingston with 280. Nate Lamb is currently fourteenth with 86 and Brody Meeks is currently fifteenth with 84.  Stolen Bases Logan Worley's 35 is the current second-best mark. Noah Fitzgerald and Ethan Underwood are both one back of the top ten with 18 apiece. And Kyle Ayers, with 15, needs two more to move into the top fifteen by himself.   Most Times Hit by Pitches Logan Worley and Rome Wallace are both in the top five- Worley is currently second with 28 while Wallace is tied for third with 27. Kyle Ayers is also in the top fifteen- his 21 HBPs is tied for thirteenth.  Walks Drawn Jackson Jones is the NCAA-era record holder with 113 and is also the only one since 2011 with triple digi...

Who has the most records?

Men's Basketball  CJ Wilson has seven records: Points, Field Goals Made, Free Throws Made, Assists, Steals, Games Played and Minutes Played

Senior Spotlight: Pien Van Kampen

Note: Due to the extra year of eligibility given to all student-athletes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I'm not saying "ends his/her career with". I'm just highlighting their career stats thus far in case they choose not to return next season.  And the second installment highlights soccer's own Pien Van Kampen , a goalkeeper from Julianadorp, Netherlands who joined the Mountain Lions from Life University and who, as I mentioned in an earlier post, is my goalie pick for all-time team. Her 253 saves is the NCAA-era record and she's the only women's goalie since 2011 with 250 saves. She's also the only program goalie since 2011 with 200 saves.  She's tied for the women's NCAA-era records with 15 wins and 10 shutouts.  Her 43 appearances between the posts is the best NCAA-era women's total (Alex Iglesias holds the overall record since 2011 with 51 appearances) and the only women's goalie since 2011 who's appeared 40 times. She's s...

Senior Spotlight: Sam Davis

Note: Due to the extra year of eligibility given to all student-athletes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I'm not saying "ends his/her career with". I'm just highlighting their career stats thus far in case they choose not to return next season.  And the first installment highlights softball's own  Sam Davis , a right-handed pitcher from Rome who joined the Mountain Lions from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.  She's won 18 games. Her six saves is the second-best mark since 2011- only Nikkie Kovalsky, with seven, has more.  Her 55 appearances in the circle means that just five pitchers since 2011 have appeared more- Darby Stanford, Kovalsky, Jeannie Perrucci, Katie-Jo Gentry and Louisa Disi. She's started 31 of 55 appearances with 10 complete games.  She's struck out 188 batters in 186 and 2/3 innings.  Her 75 strikeouts looking is third-most since 2011.  She's induced 230 fly-outs and 124 ground-outs against 190 hits.  And she has an impressive ...

Mountain Lion News- Saturday, May 14th

Baseball A 10-6 win over Georgia College moved them into the Peach Belt title game.  Senior right-hander McLain Harris earned the win after striking out four across eight innings of work, setting a series of milestones. 1. It was his tenth win of the season, which equaled his total number of victories entering the year. 2. It was the twentieth win of his career, which extends his NCAA-era record. He's the first YHC baseball pitcher in the NCAA era to join the 20-win club. He's also the first since 2011 to join the 20-20 club, with 20 wins and 25 saves to his credit.  3. He's also now the NCAA-era leader in innings pitched with 284 and 2/3, surpassing Michael Livingston's total of 282 and 2/3. Harris and Livingston are the only two since 2011 with 280 innings pitched. 4. He recorded his 270th strikeout on his third of the game and is now just nine back of tying Livingston's NCAA-era record.  He's extended his NCAA-era second-place mark with 271.  5. And his 102nd...

What records can be broken? Part One: Women's Basketball

Games Played Current: Shereese Williams and Jada Williams (103) Closest Active Player: Lindsey Caudell (80)  Final Answer: Depending on who returns, most likely in the next couple of seasons. Caudell, Niaya White (68 games) and Carly Winters (66 games) are all seniors. If Caudell returns and plays all 28 games, she'll set a new mark with 108 appearances. Assuming they don't, however, Mackenzie Johnson has 64 games while Kalen Surles has 63 appearances and both of them will move further up the leaderboard. What's definite, though, is that the six with triple-digit appearances (Shereese and Jada, Kaycee Cash, Keta Robinette, Briana Bell and Lauren Smith) will remain in the top fifteen for a while.  Steals Current: Lauren Smith (252) Closest Active Player: Kalen Surles (96)  Final Answer: It's not outside the realm of possibility, but it's not a done deal, either. Kalen would need to average 79 steals per season- or 2.8 per game- to have a shot. While this isn't im...

Men's Basketball All-Time Team: Frontcourt

We've started an all-time team for men's soccer with goalie Alex Iglesias. We've started an all-time team for women's soccer with goalie Pien Van Kampen.  We've started an all-time team for men's lacrosse with goalie Sean Dever and faceoff specialist Zach Stephenson.  And we've started an all-time team for women's lacrosse with goalie Julia Darroch.  Now, let's move on to men's basketball and look at the two guard positions- who's running the offense as the frontcourt? For point guard I'm going a bit unorthodox here and going with Brian Harper , who led the entirety of Division II in assists per game in 2018-19. CJ Wilson is the only men's basketballer since 2010 with 500 assists but Harper's 483 in 57 games gives him a not-to-shabby career average of 8.4 helpers, compared to Wilson's 5.2 per game. Not to worry, though, CJ Wilson still makes the frontcourt as the shooting guard . He's the NCAA-era leading scorer acro...

Men's Lacrosse All-Time Team, Contd.

We know who's the last line of defense, as the goalie on the roster is Sean Dever. What we need now is someone to anchor the center midfield- a faceoff specialist , in other words.  And as of now, that's Zach Stephenson . Stephenson ended his 46-game, three-season career in 2018 with 709 faceoff wins- the school record as of the conclusion of 2019- and 327 ground balls, which is also a school record, making him the first and so far only person in Mountain Lion men's lacrosse history with 700 faceoff wins and 300 ground balls.

Starting All-Time Teams, Part Two

Men's Soccer The goalie spot is filled by Alex Iglesias . At the conclusion of his career in 2019, he set (and still holds) career records for games played (51), games started (40), minutes played (4,610), wins (39) and shutouts (20).  Women's Soccer The goalie spot belongs to Pien Van Kampen . She's the only NCAA-era women's goalie with 250 saves and 3,000 minutes. In addition, she's tops in saves (253), games played (43) and minutes played (3,833) and tied for the top spot in wins (15) and shutouts (10).

Starting All-Time Teams, Part One

Women's Lacrosse The goalie position is easy enough to fill in.  Julia Darroch transferred from Detroit-Mercy as a sophomore in 2016 and finished up with several women's records. She has the top saves percentage, the lowest goals against average, the fewest losses through thirty or more appearances and is the women's wins leader with 36, sixteen more than current senior Rachel Robb.  Men's Lacrosse The goalie position, after some deliberation, belongs to Sean Dever . He holds the saves record with 397, has the lowest goals against average and is the men's winningest goalie with 22 victories. He also not only has the fewest losses among 20+ appearance goalies on the men's side but the only winning record at 22-7 for his career.

The softball "10-10 Club"

Criteria: 10 or more wins and 10 or more complete games   Who's in? Sam Davis, Louisa Disi, Jill Dixon, Katie-Jo Gentry, Dharma Rosbrugh and Victoria Sink  Other Wins-Complete Games Clubs Darby Stanford is the lone member of the 60-60 club with 65 wins and 70 complete games, both NCAA-era records  Nikkie Kovalsky is the lone member of the 40-40 club with 54 wins and 45 complete games  Jeannie Perrucci is the lone member of the 20-20 club with 32 wins and 23 complete games

Milestones to look for next season

Lacrosse Current sophomore faceoff specialist Jacob Haas can reach an impressive milestone next season. He currently has 103 ground balls and needs just five to move into tenth place in program history- men's or women's. Currently, the only people with more are Zach Stephenson, Zac Barrett, Rachel Lepine, Erika Cross, Hannah Sacristan, Matty Ledon, Andrew Kim, Jaclyn Kernohan, Kerry Ostrowski, Kelsey Dover and Taylor Lincoln (Dover and Lincoln are currently tied for tenth with 107).  On the women's side, current junior defender Eryn Brown can reach 100 ground balls if she scoops up just six more and current sophomore defender Gwenyth Gibbons can reach the 40-game milestone next season as she's currently sitting at 38.  Softball Current junior pitcher Jill Dixon is one shy of 50 appearances for her career and she needs to pitch 16 and 1/3 innings to reach 200 in that category. Current freshman Kylie Ferguson can join the "10-10" club next season, as she has ni...

2021-22 Seniors

Note: not all of these student-athletes won't return next year due to the extra year of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic Chad Brown (Baseball) Lindsay Caudell (Basketball)  Sam Davis (Softball)  Jing Dong (Tennis) Aimee Durn (Soccer) Noah Fitzgerald (Baseball) McLain Harris (Baseball) Ryan Inches (Baseball) Jackson Jones (Baseball) Seth McCoy (Basketball) Lenny Pradia (Basketball) Rachel Robb (Lacrosse) Carissa Spiker (Basketball) Karah Straub (Softball) Pien Van Kampen (Soccer) Niaya White (Basketball) Carly Winters (Basketball) Logan Worley (Baseball)

Quick Hits- May 9th, 2022

Softball Senior right-hander Sam Davis recorded her fifty-fifth career appearance during the Peach Belt semifinal loss against North Georgia, solidifying her hold on the sixth spot in the program's NCAA era. Only Louisa Disi, Katie-Jo Gentry, Jeannie Perrucci, Nikkie Kovalsky and Darby Stanford have appeared more times in the circle since 2011. In terms of all-sport appearances at Young Harris, she joins Julia Darroch (55 appearances for lacrosse), Sarah Garner (55 appearances for basketball) and Seba Andreassen (55 appearances for soccer)   Baseball Junior outfielder Rome Wallace has connected on 23 career round-trippers and needs just three more to move into fifth place on the NCAA-era list. Senior catcher/infielder Jackson Jones has connected on 33 for his career.  Jones has 217 hits in his career and needs just two more to move past Trey Rogers into third since 2011. Senior outfielder Logan Worley is currently fifth with 212. Senior infielder Noah Fitzgerald has ...
